Donald Trump just went over RFK Jr.’s head and hired a pro vaccine Black woman doctor to run the CDC. Let that sink in.
On Thursday, Trump announced on Truth Social that he’s nominating Dr. Erica Schwartz, a retired Coast Guard Rear Admiral and former Deputy Surgeon General, to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He called her “a STAR.” What he did not mention is that his own Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has spent the last year torching the CDC’s vaccine credibility, and Schwartz is basically the anti Kennedy.
This is a demotion dressed up as a nomination.
Schwartz is not some random MAGA hire. She is credentialed beyond belief. MD from Brown. JD from the University of Maryland. Master’s in Public Health from the Uniformed Services University. A biomedical engineering degree to round it out. She spent 24 years in uniform across the Navy, the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and the Coast Guard, where she made Rear Admiral and served as Chief Medical Officer.
Her father was a career Navy master chief stationed in San Diego. Three of her siblings served in the military. She is one of the few Black women in a senior leadership position across the entire second Trump administration.
She also ran COVID testing during Trump 1. According to former Trump health official Brett Giroir’s book “Memoir of a Pandemic,” Schwartz personally volunteered to be the ordering physician for drive through COVID tests nationwide. That means she signed off on millions of tests while the rest of the administration was telling people the virus was a hoax.
Here is where it gets messy for Kennedy.
Schwartz wrote the federal government’s first ever official policies on pandemic flu, anthrax, and smallpox vaccination during her time at Coast Guard Headquarters. Her entire professional legacy is built on vaccinating people. The New York Times reported that her nomination is a signal the White House is distancing itself from Kennedy’s anti vaccine agenda ahead of the midterms.
A former colleague put it plain: “She’s really wicked smart, and is not subject to rumor and conspiracy theories.”
Translation: she is not playing the Children’s Health Defense games Kennedy built his brand on.
Kennedy had to publicly thank Trump for the pick. On X he said he was looking forward to “working together to restore trust, accountability, and scientific integrity.” The man is cooked and he knows it.
The CDC has been a revolving door since Trump took office for the second time. Four directors in fifteen months.
Trump’s first pick, former Florida Rep. Dave Weldon, got pulled in March 2025 because Republican senators said he was too anti vax to confirm. Susan Monarez got the job next, lasted one month, then got fired by Kennedy in August for pushing back on his vaccine policy changes. After that it was HHS Deputy Jim O’Neill, then NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya holding it down on a dual role basis.
Meanwhile a federal judge in Massachusetts blocked Kennedy’s overhaul of the childhood vaccine schedule last month, calling the changes “arbitrary and capricious.” The measles outbreak has hit over 1,700 cases this year, almost all among unvaccinated people. Polling shows vaccine policy could sink Republicans in the midterms.
Somebody at the White House looked at that math and said we need an adult in the room.
Here is the part nobody is talking about yet.
After Schwartz left government in 2021, she cashed in. She is currently the President of Insurance Solutions at UnitedHealthcare. Yes, that UnitedHealthcare. The same company America has been dragging since the Luigi Mangione situation. The same company synonymous with claim denials.
She also sits on the board of Aveanna Healthcare Holdings, a publicly traded home care company, and Butterfly Network, a medical imaging outfit. Aveanna’s own filings flagged that her UHC executive role creates “information interlock concerns” since UnitedHealthcare is a major payor for Aveanna’s business, but the board cleared her as independent anyway.
If she gets confirmed, a sitting UnitedHealthcare executive will run the agency that sets vaccine policy, tracks outbreaks, and shapes public health guidance for 330 million Americans. That is a conversation that is going to get loud.
Schwartz has to get through the Senate. That is not guaranteed. Democrats are going to press her hard on whether she will stand up to Kennedy or fold. Republicans who backed the RFK Jr. agenda might see her as too mainstream.
The watchdog group Protect Our Care already put out a statement basically daring her to pick a side. Their question: will she go along with Kennedy’s “chaos and conspiracy driven anti vax schemes” or will she actually do the job.
The early read from people who worked with her is that she is going to run the CDC with minimal interference. One official told reporters the goal is for her to come in and run her agency the way Mehmet Oz runs CMS.
Biden passed Schwartz over for Acting Surgeon General in 2021, so she is not a Democrat by any stretch. But she is also not an ivermectin and essential oils type. She is a career military doctor who believes in vaccines and public health data.
That makes her the most normal person in a Trump health agency right now. And that, somehow, makes her a political miracle.
We will see if she survives Kennedy.

If this is a true story. it is the 1st thing thump has done since he took office that gives me some hope on anything we have seen from this administration. There is a tiny bit of light on this dark horizon…IF this story is true.
Why in the hell is this woman not already running the CDC. Her credentials are off the charts. Send RFK Jr packing.
